The Toyota Porte has quickly become our most popular compact wheelchair access car because, according to customer feedback, clients can actually travel in the front passenger seat with the driver beside them. They feel connected rather than being chauffeured in the rear of a larger people mover - which for many are the stereotypical wheelchair vehicles on offer.

What’s really cool is the large sliding door on the passenger side. It makes transferring in and out of the car a breeze. Add to that the compact size, great overall visibility, ease of use and excellent economy, it’s an excellent choice if bigger isn’t always better for you. It’s the perfect size for up to 4 passengers plus the person in a wheelchair.

Wheelchair Accessible Feature

Without exception, clients are amazed the first time they witness the incredible engineering of the Toyota Porte wheelchair feature. As you can see in the video above (good idea to watch), this car has an OEM wheelchair fitted into the front passenger seat. The passenger seat sits on an electric arm that turns the chair 90 degrees and extends it outside the perimeter of the car and lowers it to the ground.

The chair then detaches and the carer can easily push the wheelchair. There are brakes on the back of the wheelchair for the carer to use if needed. When re-entering the car, the wheelchair is simply positioned onto the extended electric arm that then raises the wheelchair back into the car and return the chair to its correct position.

The powered passenger door opens to a remarkable 1165 mm tall and 1020 mm wide making it an excellent size for a wheelchair. Until we saw our first Toyota Porte we couldn’t believe how much access you genuinely get with this intelligently designed sliding door.

There is a staggering overall internal height of 1380 mm. This is due to the cleverly designed flat floor and higher roofline for the factory wheelchair access versions.

About this Vehicle
These cars were designed with ease of use and comfort in mind. The bucket velour seats are wide and soft with plenty of legroom. The rear seats are incredibly simple to operate. When not in use the rear seats stow on the interior sides of the vehicle. When in use they simply lower and lock into the floor.

Toyota’s Welcab vehicles are manufactured with quality and durability. This Alphard has all the extras you’d expect - power windows, mirrors, dual AC, a second-row passenger side power doors (operational from buttons on the dash), interior ‘mood’ lighting (again – from a button on the dash). Wheelchair Features
This Alphard is a sloper – it is named after the hydraulic sloping mechanism in the rear of the vehicle. As the car lowers an electric ramp unfolds at the same time. The lightweight yet strong aluminium ramp touches the ground at a 9 to 12-degree angle allowing a gentle incline for the wheelchair occupant to be loaded into the car.

We fit International standard 4 point wheelchair securement systems to each car to meet Australian Design Regulations (ADR’s). This vehicle has 'oval pockets' which fit into the floor of both the middle and rear positions. This gives the person in the wheelchair the option to be in the middle row or in the rear row. Each oval pocket has a retractor which is placed on top of the pocket. There are two retractors in the front and 2 in the back of the wheelchair which are firmly secured to the front and back of the wheelchair.

This unique Alphard has been modified with hand controls as well as the power ramp at the back. The Toyota Estima better known as the Tarago in Australia has been one of the best selling people movers in the world for the last 30 years. This is a 2004 pearl white Estima Welcab with a factory built rear wheelchair ramp and wheelchair restraints designed and engineered in the Toyota factory. This Estima has travelled a verified 49,000 km which is nothing for a Toyota.

This is a Long Wheel Base 2014 VW Caravelle modified for 2 wheelchairs in the rear. It seats 6 plus 2 wheelchairs. It has a certificate of modification for Queensland and a Vehicle Safety Compliance Certificate for NSW. It has NSW registration to August 31st 2026.

This Caravelle is a 2L turbo diesel and very fuel efficient averaging 8 L/100 KM. They are a popular vehicle because they are stylish - who doesn't know and love the look of a VW van! They have a roomy interior, you get all the perks of driving a van but as the height is 1990 mm you still get to be able to drive and park in undercover car parks - something you often can't do in a van. They are easy to climb into and out of and this particular van has 4 rear seats which can be taken out of or put back in depending on how many travellers you need seats for in the rear.
